In 1849, the brothers Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau opened a plant for the production of berry liqueurs in the city of Angers. And in 1875, Edouard-Jean's son - also Edward - created a recipe for an orange liqueur with an unsurpassed taste, which simultaneously used bitter and sweet citrus varieties of only the best harvests. For three generations, the Cointreau family kept the secret of the production of their liqueurs a secret. In 1885, Edward filed a patent for the name and shape of the bottle, by which the Cointreau liqueur is easily recognizable today.
