The botanical definition of a berry is a fleshy fruit produced from a single flower and containing one ovary. Grapes and bananas are two common examples. The berry is the most common type of fleshy fruit in which the entire ovary wall ripens into an edible pericarp. They may have one or more carpels. The seeds are usually embedded in the fleshy interior of the ovary, but there are some non-fleshy exceptions, such as peppers, that have air rather than pulp around their seeds.
Melons include a number of different types, from the familiar Galia and Canteloupe to the large watermelon, and all have the potential to be delicious. Melons are a great summer fruit, but have become a year-round part of the fruit bowl and a staple for any dieter. Unfortunately, it is difficult as a consumer to tell whether a melon is going to be good or not, such is the variability in their eating quality. Some supermarkets are striving to improve the reliability of melons on sale and are making steady progress, and we will help as much as possible to identify the best.
